This object is a traditional Hakka dressing box (客家鏡箱), also widely referred to as a foldable vanity chest or dowry mirror box.
It was made in the late Qing Dynasty, possible as early as the 1880s to the very early Republic-era up to as late as the 1920s.
These compact, portable boxes were an essential component of a bride's dowry in traditional Taiwanese Hakka households. They feature a distinct fold-out mirror stand built into the lid structure over functional storage drawers. The dark lacquer finish mixed with surviving traces of red pigment inside, simple hardware, and classic panel relief carving are highly characteristic of regional everyday vernacular furniture from northwestern and southern Taiwan's Hakka villages during this period.
It is currently unrestored with a wonderful patina.
