Metal rimmed, and lidded Qing-era / early Republic-era vessel – Circa 1880s – 1920

$4,095-$4,095

The object is a squat, globular lidded vessel sitting on a short, slightly tapered base ring. The lid is gently domed, perfectly mirroring the curve of the main body, and is topped with a flat-topped, circular knob that functions as a small handle.

It is crafted from fine white glazed porcelain decorated with underglaze blue cobalt pigment. Notably, the meeting rims of both the lid knob and the upper lid rim feature a darkened metal rim binding (often silver, brass, or paktong), which serves to protect the edges from chipping and denotes its history as an export or specialty luxury item.

The exterior is hand-painted with a dense, flowing floral arrangement—most likely peonies traditionally symbolising wealth, honour, and prosperity.

This particular item was likely a rouge container or used in a home to store some form of make-up and was made for export from China to Southeast Asia.

Size - 13.5cm across x 9cm high
